Sanitising sponges and scrubbers with no chemicals in sight!

We love discovering about the many wonders of natural cleaning with white vinegar, and this cleaning tip for sanitising your brushes, sponges and scrubbers is no exception. Vinegar is certainly already a fave of ours at elaundry because of it’s powerful cleaning abilities – as written about in this blog post on stain removal using vinegar – but it still never ceases to amaze us how easy it is to use!

So, if you’re short on time, but hate the grime, then this is a cleaning hack for you.

How does vinegar work as a sanitiser?

You’re probably thinking that it’s crazy how a simple soak of your sponges, scrubbers, scourers and brushes in white vinegar overnight manages to be an effective way of sanitising them. But the beauty of it is that the acetic acid in the vinegar is all that is needed to kill bacteria, as well as eliminating odours along the way!

There are other benefits to using such a classic natural cleaning product too…

• It will reduce the spread of bacteria around your home if done regularly.
• It will extend the amount of usage you get from your cleaning sponges, scrubbers and brushes.

TOP TIP: Pour the used vinegar down the drain – it will help sanitise this along the way too!

There is another way to sanitise your scrubbers, sponges and cleaning brushes…

The dishwasher can also be your friend when it comes to sanitising dish cloths, sponges, scrubbers etc. Simply rinse off any food scraps, squeeze out excess moisture and place on the top rack of your dishwasher. The heat and the dishwashing powder will combine to effectively kill bacteria and neutralise any nasty smells.

A great thing about this method is that it can be done daily, whenever you usually pop your dishes on to clean. Which means you’ll never have a dirty cloth or sponge to hand again!
